Hello Dagny, My forgotten sighting was historical fiction or a book about books. Within another storyline was 1930s-40s Paris and the common Balzac Works often seen at home. This set described was Balzac Works, publisher Calmann Levy, 4×6 small format with red spine. Very affordable for the era. Also, some book looting during the Occupation. Can anyone help recall this book for me? Thank you for any thoughts. – Peter E

I recall reading some scenarios like that, Peter, but can’t recall which book or even which author/books were referred to. I just had a scan through our “Balzac Sightings” thread at the Yahoo group, but none seemed to exactly fit. If you can access the thread at https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/balzac/conversations/topics/5874 something might nudge your memory.

Thanks Dagny, and I hope others from the old Balzac Group will see this thread and offer ideas. This CL Balzac interwar series did exist and would have looked great on the bookshelf.

HI Dagny, If still active here is one for the Balzac sightings list. “Austerlist” by Sibald. Pg180-81 US edition there is a reference to a set of 55 small Carmine Red Balzac Works.

Thanks, Peter! Is this the one you had in mind or something else you happened to find?

Hi Dagny, This reference is close but not the exact one. The correct one will name Calmann Levy publisher and how common an affordable their set was at the time. Five francs(20cents) per volume for the PB version. in 1932. HB, red spine in my description,
