Good introduction to the novel, thanks. I was a bit confused by the ‘tigre irlandais’ in the novel but just read in Robb’s biography about the subtle homoeroticism of these master/groom relationships in Balzac’s own life.

Sigmund Freud read this book right before his doctor helped him overdose on Morphine, the story is interesting, i can see why he would pick this book; thank you for the summary.

Thanks to all for your kind comments. Our yahoo group read the entire Balzac canon over about six years. Each week we’d take turns summarizing the week’s reading (about 50 pages). Towards the end of our project we decided to build this blog with our work as there seems to be so little Balzac on the net. I’m glad it is useful – it was a lot of effort, and knowing others are finding it helpful makes it worth the effrot!
